Memorandum to Congressional Oversight Committee Chairmen: Forbes Assails Clinton’s Character Assassins

August 13, 1997

SUBJECT: “CLINTON’S CHARACTER ASSASSINS”

Have you read THE WEEKLY STANDARD piece, “Inside The Clinton Attack Machine,” by Thomas M. DeFrank and Thomas Galvin in the August 4, 1997 issue?

It is extremely disturbing.

President Clinton should discipline his operatives. He should fire staff responsible for attacking Billy Dale’s reputation, and use his legal defense fund proceeds to reimburse Mr. Dale’s $500,000 in legal expenses. He should fire lawyers in his employ when they threaten private U.S. citizens. He should publicly order officials of his Administration to cease and desist all public comment on the Kenneth Starr investigation, and publicly appeal to his friends to stop their attacks on Mr. Starr as well.

Thats what the President should do. But don’t hold your breath. Congress should not wait for President Clinton to clean house.

Congressional oversight committees should do some investigating of their own. If Messrs. DeFrank and Galvins’ reporting holds up to scrutiny, then the Clinton Administration is engaged in an outrageous, dangerous and chilling abuse of power. It is time these activities be brought to light and stopped.
