20 Sep 2013 Project 21’s Cooper on Navy Yard Shooting, Latest Zimmerman Controversy

Project 21 co-chairman Horace Cooper, on Arise TV’s 9/19/13 edition of “Left, Right and Middle” segment, talked about the recent shooting at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard.  While many on the left sought to use the tragedy as a means of resurrecting gun control, Horace said the gun used in the shooting was obtained legally and D.C. has very strict gun prohibitions — so gun laws cannot be made an issue.  Instead, people “need to look at some of the ancillary issues” — namely, mental health.  His debate partner for this segment, journalist Karen Hunter, agreed with Horace.

Later, the two disagreed about George Zimmerman — who was recently brought back into the headlines after his estranged wife accused him of violent acts against her.  Hunter, obviously still angry about the not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin case, suggested Zimmerman’s history should have led to his incarceration for the Martin death.  Horace pointed out that irrelevant information to the Martin death is inadmissible in court and that police are not qualified to make psychiatric calls.  In another story about a University of Alabama sorority criticized for not pledging black applicants, Horace said a private institution should never be forced by the government to do anything, and that this is a harbinger of big government and “we don’t need a government that big.”
