National Center for Public Policy Research to Be Among Those Shareholders in Attendance Wondering Why the Retail Giant Has Chosen to Be an Aggressive Player in the Culture Wars
Target Announced April 19 that Fitting Rooms and Restrooms are Not Assigned by Biological Sex in Its Stores
A Boycott Petition Has Reached 1.3 Million Signers
Target Stock Has Dropped by 18 Percent
Costa Mesa, CA / Washington, D.C. – The retail chain Target will hold its annual shareholder meeting Wednesday, June 8 at 9 AM Pacific time, the first time Target’s management will come face-to-face with shareholders since it aggressively entered the culture wars on April 19 by announcing it would “respect” its customers by letting everyone use the fitting and restrooms of their choice — regardless of the views of the other customers using those facilities.
Since then, Target has been the focus of a boycott petition drive by the American Family Association that has quickly reached over 1.3 million signatures.
Coincidentally or not, the share price or Target stock has dropped by 18 percent during the seven weeks since its culture wars announcement.
The National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project will be among those shareholders in attendance wondering why Target seemingly has chosen to make the culture wars a priority over retail sales this year.
The National Center will be represented by its Free Enterprise Project Director, Justin Danhof, Esq. Danhof will be available to the press following the meeting. To talk with him, contact Judy Kent at (703) 759-7476 or cell (703) 477-7476 or [email protected].
Last week, Mr. Danhof attended the shareholder meeting of Target’s main rival, Walmart. He addressed that meeting, speaking in support of a shareholder proposal submitted by the National Center.
Danhof has spoken at over a dozen shareholder meetings of major corporations this year alone, and many dozens more in recent years.
An op-ed by Danhof discussing the methods McDonald’s has used — unsuccessfully, according to Danhof — to defend itself from assault from the political left appeared in Crain’s Chicago Business on Monday. Danhof spoke at the McDonald’s meeting near Chicago on May 26, where the National Center submitted another shareholder proposal.
The National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project is the nation’s most active free-market shareholder activism program. In 2014-15, National Center representatives participated in 69 shareholder meetings, and Target’s meeting will be its 16th meeting so far this year.
The National Center for Public Policy Research, founded in 1982, is a non-partisan, free-market, independent conservative think-tank. Ninety-four percent of its support comes from individuals, less than four percent from foundations, and less than two percent from corporations. It receives over 350,000 individual contributions a year from over 96,000 active recent contributors. Sign up for free issue alerts here or follow us on Twitter at @NationalCenter.
