{"id":29667,"date":"2018-02-27T17:00:54","date_gmt":"2018-02-27T21:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/?p=29667"},"modified":"2018-03-21T11:20:58","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T15:20:58","slug":"making-schools-secure-common-sense-solution-safety-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/ncppr\/2018\/02\/27\/making-schools-secure-common-sense-solution-safety-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Schools Secure a Common-Sense Solution in Safety Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29629 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Constable-Council-250x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Constable-Council-250x300.jpeg 250w, https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Constable-Council-768x920.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Constable-Council-835x1000.jpeg 835w, https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Constable-Council-700x838.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Constable-Council.jpeg 850w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>\u201cDoing something\u201d about gun violence in our schools should include focusing on a more straightforward attitude toward providing safety and a modern security strategy for those schools.<\/p>\n<p>This is the thrust of a new commentary by <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/project-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Project 21<\/a> Co-Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/staff\/archbishop-council-nedd-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Council Nedd II<\/a> \u2013 a constable in Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>In his Daily Caller commentary, <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/02\/23\/school-safety-is-a-common-sense-solution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSchool Safety is a Common-Sense Solution,\u201d<\/a> Council noted that too many people are focused on factors that will harm our rights help make society safer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The rights our Founding Fathers sought to protect \u2013 including gun ownership \u2013 are not the problem. What we must address is not guns themselves but how young people get them. More important, however, is the need for effective school safety strategies that look beyond politics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Council bring a unique perspective to the table in the debate over America\u2019s alleged \u201cgun culture,\u201d root causes of anger and what police can and should do. He has actual experience in the worlds of law enforcement, education and ministry. He explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a clergyman, law enforcement officer and former inner-city school teacher, I have seen firsthand the many factors contributing to increasing societal violence. There\u2019s growing family dysfunction with too many fatherless families. There are more unchurched people. Schools ban faith. We have a culture where parents allow their children access to a constant stream of violence and anger through video games, social media, YouTube and entertainment media.<\/p>\n<p>But Parkland raises another issue. While the shooter is clearly to blame, institutional and human error in dealing with the situation bears some responsibility for the carnage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Citing retired NYPD lieutenant Dr. Darrin Porcher, Council noted the failure of those involved in the recent Parkland, Florida school shooting to <a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2018\/02\/25\/broward-county-sheriff-shooting-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quickly challenge<\/a> the shooter or adequately follow-up on prior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/02\/22\/politics\/fbi-bowdich-parkland-tip\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips<\/a> about the shooter\u2019s mental instability and access to weapons. But Council also said that communities \u2013 possibly including in Parkland \u2013 are behind-the-curve on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/three-sheriff-s-deputies-remained-outside-school-during-parkland-shooting-n850946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest police strategies<\/a> for reducing the potential for damage caused by active shooters:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Having recently received tactical active shooter training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center,\u00a0I am aware of the new methods for addressing active shooters.\u00a0Officers are now expected to be bolder.\u00a0Before Columbine and Sandy Hook, standard procedure was for the first officer on the scene to set a perimeter and wait for the SWAT team. Today, officers like me are being trained to go into buildings and eliminate threats as quickly as possible \u2013 minimizing the loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, most officers do not receive this training.
