Challenges to the guarantee of equal access to opportunity for people of faith.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30714 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Donna-Jackson-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Donna Jackson\" width=\"153\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Donna-Jackson-copy.jpg 200w, https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Donna-Jackson-copy-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 153px) 100vw, 153px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/civil-rights\/478616-todays-civil-rights-struggle-religious-tolerance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commentary<\/a><\/strong> published on the website of <em>The Hill<\/em> newspaper on the day America commemorates civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/project-21\/\">Project 21<\/a><\/strong> member <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/project21\/staff\/donna-jackson\/\">Donna Jackson<\/a><\/strong> writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Today\u2019s civil rights struggle is mainly over freedom of religion. Liberals have stirred up anger and distrust of faith through fear and intimidation tactics. For example, they have branded evangelicals as \u201cwhite evangelicals\u201d \u2013 trying to make them synonymous with white supremacy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And the disrespect for and mistreatment of faith-based individuals and institutions extends beyond just the evangelical community. Donna also notes that \u201ctargets include groups that support Israel, Jewish and Christian organizations such as the Salvation Army and Chick-fil-A.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donna explains that Dr. King\u2019s dream for America sought racial and religious tolerance, and both are vital for overall success:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From King\u2019s perspective, the civil rights movement wasn\u2019t just about bringing races together. It was also about respecting religion. He recognized, like so many of us Christians do, that freedom on the outside begins with freedom on the inside.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to the economic and social advances experienced by black Americans during the Trump presidency, Donna notes that the White House is now working to free communities of faith from being unfairly targeted for their beliefs. In particular, she notes how\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/TomFitton\/irs-corruption-tea-party\/2015\/05\/06\/id\/642911\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IRS investigations<\/a><\/strong> of religious institutions during the Obama era kept them from engaging in political speech in violation of their First Amendment rights. On the other hand, the Trump Administration has sought to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/presidential-executive-order-promoting-free-speech-religious-liberty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">relieve<\/a><\/strong> them from this fear of government intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Donna reminds readers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dr. King saw his faith as the solution to hatred.
