But you wouldn\u2019t think so from the rhetoric coming from liberal politicians and their establishment media cheering section.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-13445 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/cohen_sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" \/>Throughout the pandemic, efforts to find a vaccine to bring the virus under control and to mitigate overall harm have been highly politicized. As National Center Senior Fellow <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/ncppr\/staff\/bonner-cohen\/\">Bonner Cohen, Ph.D.,<\/a><\/strong> points out in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/suppressing-medical-debate-over-covid-19-will-only-prolong-the-disease_3582987.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">commentary<\/a><\/strong> for The Epoch Times, this is coming at a large, unnecessary and tragic human cost.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, and announced shortly after the presidential election, two vaccines exist that offer a high rate of effectiveness in treating COVID-19. And the vaccine that is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-vaccine-candidate-against\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made by Pfizer<\/a><\/strong>, Bonner notes, would \u201cvindicate the Trump Administration\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/coronavirus\/explaining-operation-warp-speed\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8216;Operation Warp Speed,&#8217;<\/a><\/strong> which mobilized the federal public-health bureaucracy to approve vaccines and other treatments in record time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But prior to the election, possible vice president-elect <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/10\/07\/kamala-harris-on-covid-vaccine-wont-take-it-trump-tells-me-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kamala Harris<\/a><\/strong> and New York Governor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/11\/09\/ny-gov-andrew-cuomo-vows-to-block-covid-19-vaccine-distribution-says-its-bad-that-vaccine-came-during-trump-admin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Cuomo<\/a> <\/strong>both made clear they were in the anti-vax camp if a vaccine came out of a Trump Administration. It\u2019s a pathetic example of how liberals seem unwilling to let science escape the grip of politics. Bonner notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The prospect of a vaccine just around the corner comes at a time when the public discussion over how to deal with the pandemic has become politicized to the point that dissident opinions, however well-argued and supported by real-world data, are being attacked. Just as the moniker \u201cclimate deniers\u201d is routinely hurled at scientists questioning the theory of human-caused global warming, those recommending therapies and other measures out of step with received opinion are met with a barrage of slings and arrows.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As an example, Bonner cites the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gbdeclaration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Great Barrington Declaration<\/a><\/strong>. This document \u201crecommend[s] concentrating efforts on the most vulnerable \u2013 the elderly with underlying conditions \u2013 while allowing others to lead more or less normal lives until, either through vaccines or other therapies, herd immunity is reached.\u201d It has been signed by tens of thousands of scientists and medical practitioners worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The Great Barrington Declaration seeks to end the collateral damage of COVID-19 lockdowns while also reducing virus-related mortality \u201cinclud[ing] lower childhood vaccination rates, worsening cardiovascular disease outcomes, fewer cancer screenings and deteriorating mental health \u2013 leading to greater excess mortality in years to come, with the working class and younger members of society carrying the heaviest burden.\u201d Yet the document, Bonner writes, was \u201cquickly met with derision in certain quarters\u201d like the World Health Organization bureaucracy, the liberal establishment and the media elite.<\/p>\n<p>Bonner explains that this opposition was based on false pretenses:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What these critics of the declaration have in common is portraying herd immunity as a costly\u00a0<em>strategy<\/em>\u00a0to suppress the virus when, in fact, it is the\u00a0<em>goal<\/em>. Herd immunity, also known as \u201cpublic Immunity,\u201d denotes the point at which the rate of new infections is stable. The declaration\u2019s authors are simply arguing that the measures taken to suppress COVID-19 have not only failed but have themselves undermined public health and destroyed livelihoods. As the authors put it: \u201cOur goal should therefore be to minimize mortality and social harm until we reach herd immunity.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On an alarming note, this anti-science, pro-lockdown mindset may already have a foothold in the White House. Should Joe Biden be certified the winner of the election, the COVID-19 transition team he\u2019s already selected contains at least two strong lockdown advocates. Dr. Michael Osterholm has called for a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/11\/11\/biden-covid-advisor-says-us-lockdown-of-4-to-6-weeks-could-control-pandemic-and-revive-economy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draconian lockdown<\/a> <\/strong>to last four to six weeks.
