{"id":42390,"date":"2022-03-03T09:00:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T14:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/?p=42390"},"modified":"2022-09-21T15:55:16","modified_gmt":"2022-09-21T19:55:16","slug":"equity-is-destroying-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/ncppr\/2022\/03\/03\/equity-is-destroying-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"Equity is Destroying Equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-42279 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Joe-Mobley-sm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Joe-Mobley-sm.jpg 200w, https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Joe-Mobley-sm-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 166px) 100vw, 166px\" \/> \u201cThe legacy of the civil rights movement, for which so many people fought and died, is hanging by a thread,&#8221; warns <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/project-21\/\">Project 21<\/a><\/strong> member <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/ncppr\/staff\/joe-mobley\/\">Joe Mobley<\/a><\/strong> in a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/23\/how-the-lefts-push-for-equity-is-destroying-equality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commentary<\/a><\/strong> published by The Federalist.<\/p>\n<p>The reason is the rise of the \u201cequity\u201d agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Joe fears that \u201cthe final nail has been placed in the coffin of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/statutes\/title-vii-civil-rights-act-1964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Civil Rights Act<\/a><\/strong>\u201d with the passage of legislation in California requiring companies based in the Golden State to have set-asides on their boards of directors for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB979\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cunderrepresented communities\u201d<\/a><\/strong> (meaning racial\/ethnic and sexual minorities).<\/p>\n<p>He warns:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One can\u2019t help but weep for the civil rights movement. The tremendous sacrifices, losses, and displays of courage driving the promise of a more perfect union \u2013 dignity, respect and equality for\u00a0<em>all<\/em>\u00a0people \u2013 are sullied. Bigotry, racism and flagrant sexism are now par for the course.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Equity, Joe explains, is far different from the equality sought by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In reality, policies aimed at achieving equity \u2013 the catch-all term for blatant discrimination against men, whites, Christians, heterosexuals, and oftentimes\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/education\/2021\/07\/22\/as-supreme-court-weighs-harvard-admissions-case-two-asian-americans-speak-out-and-allege-bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asians<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 are really meant to wildly overrepresent certain groups. For instance, many companies have initiatives aimed at increasing the number of black senior leaders from some lower percentage to a radically high number \u2013 as high as 20 percent. One problem: black Americans only make up\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/fact\/table\/US\/RHI225219\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13.4 percent<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0of the population.<\/p>\n<p>Racial quotas within the workforce create\u00a0a zero-sum game. Companies can hire and promote more black Americans, but they cannot increase the overall black population.
