{"id":8251,"date":"2012-05-09T16:50:12","date_gmt":"2012-05-09T20:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ncdata.wpengine.com\/?p=1853"},"modified":"2017-10-04T15:08:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T19:08:19","slug":"blog-massachusetts-bans-the-bake-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/ncppr\/2012\/05\/09\/blog-massachusetts-bans-the-bake-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Massachusetts Bans the Bake Sale!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1854\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/iStock_000016946808XSmall-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"iStock_000016946808XSmall\" width=\"220\" height=\"146\" \/>On August 1, the only food that can legally be sold in Massachusetts public schools is food that is prepared or distributed by the school.\u00a0 That means <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/US\/2012\/05\/07\/Massachusetts-to-ban-school-bake-sales\/UPI-85121336433591\/?spt=hs&amp;or=tn\">the era of the bake sale is over<\/a> in the Bay State.\u00a0 As if that isn\u2019t enough, regulators are looking to further ban any similar sales as they relate to after-school activities such as banquets, sporting events and door-to-door candy sales.<\/p>\n<p>Interviewed by UPI, one PTA parent succinctly explains the effect this ban will have on fundraising for extracurricular organizations such as clubs and sports teams: \u201cIf you want to make a quick $250, you hold a bake sale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Massachusetts Department of Public Health says selling Bundt cakes to buy bats is no way to combat childhood obesity.\u00a0 DPH medical director Dr. Lauren Smith says: \u201cWe know that schools need those clubs and resources.\u00a0 We want them to be sure and have them, but to [fundraise for] them a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So good luck with that, parents!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/P21Index.html\">Project 21<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/P21Index.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1855 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/P21CherylynLeBon-16-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"P21CherylynLeBon\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> spokeswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcenter.org\/bios\/P21Speakers_LeBon.html\">Cherylyn Harley LeBon<\/a> says this is yet another example of the rise of the nanny state in America, and that the government needs to realize it is the home where habits are acquired and not their institutions of learning.\u00a0 Cherylyn says:<\/p>\n<p>As the mother of two young children, I am just as concerned as anyone else about alarming obesity rates in our country. \u00a0No one wants their child to be obese.\u00a0 However, it is not the government\u2019s job to police what our children consume. \u00a0It is parent\u2019s responsibility to provide their children with healthy and nutritious meals.<\/p>\n<p>States and schools can ban whatever food they prefer, but children will learn healthy eating habits at their own kitchen table \u2014 not from a state imposed law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On August 1, the only food that can legally be sold in Massachusetts public schools is food that is prepared or distributed by the school.\u00a0 That means the era of the bake sale is over in the Bay State.\u00a0 As if that isn\u2019t enough, regulators&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[74,24],"tags":[77],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Massachusetts Bans the Bake Sale!
